You DO Sort of Fit the Definition, Though

Photo of basement storage shelves full of "stuff"

Don’t you just HATE it!  They only pay us a visit when they
want something.  Do they ever drop by just to say hello?
No.  And even when they do take us out of this dark base-
ment for a while, do they ever compliment us on what a good
job we do?  No.  They treat us like impersonal objects.

Close-up of a two-toned rose in the garden

LOOK AT ME!  I’ve only been in the sun a half hour and I’m
starting to burn!  That’s the last time I’ll ever buy a cheap tube
of sunscreen.  I’ll have to go indoors for the rest of the afternoon!

Photo of lilies surrounding a pool

We red lilies have had a much better upbringing in the Liliaceae
family than those loud yellow lilies over there.  They gossip all
the time!  It’s shameful.  By the way, it’s time for all of us to
share what the humans said today as they tossed coins into
the pool.  Just wait until you hear the scandalous comments
that Ruby overheard.  It will blister your blossoms.

Empty cartons on the end of a cafeteria table

They waste the ink on the artwork they put on us.  No one
really sees us.  We are just beasts of burden, good to haul
things around in, then, at best, recycled or, at worst, set out for
trash.  I wish I could have been born a milk crate or even a
small berry basket.  THEY get respect.

No, this is just a stage for us.  We are destined to live free in
fresh air, to bask in sunshine, to be nurtured by the rain.  As
we mature we will flower and bring beauty into the world.  And
when our season is past, they will gather seeds from us for the
next generation who will start the cycle of life here once more.
Aw, I’ve made you all cry.
