I am CLAY SOIL that formed over millions of years through an elaborate process as the Earth evolved. To the homeowner, who wants to put a rose bush here, I am just “bad dirt.”

But the rose bush will look so much better
I certainly HOPE so! Digging such big holes for a dozen roses* is a whole lot like WORK!
*not all red.
Bet you were bushed after claying around in the Dirt – lots of gossip for the neighbours to spread about what you were putting to bed . Some of those folks just keep gravelling on and on expressing their sediments, raking up old issues & not leaving it alone.
I had a friend named Clay. He needed as much amending as your soil.
With some work, he turned out to be pretty productive, as your rose
bushes are sure to be.
A lot of organic matter, a little sand, and some top soil should take care
of your roses needs.
The company I bought the roses from had specific suggestions for preparing the soil, starting with REMOVING the soil from a 2-cubic-foot hole. Filled 3 wheelbarrows from what I took out of EACH hole. Good thing we have a deep ravine.
Quothe the ravine “Never more!”
Such dirty talk!
The homeowner is OBVIOUSLY a mudslinger.
